Neuro-Linguistic
Programming
Neuro-Linguistic
Programming is the art and science of personal excellence.
Neuro
The nervous system (the mind/body) through which our experiences are
processed via our five senses:
- Visual
- sense of sight
- Auditory-
sense of hearing
- Kinesthetic-
sense of touch
- Olfactory-sense
of smell
- Gustatory-
sense of taste
Linguistic
Language and other nonverbal communication systems through which our
neural representations are coded, ordered and given meaning.
- Pictures
- Sounds
- Feelings
- Tastes
- Smells
- Words
(Self Talk)
Neuro-Linguistic
Programming is how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve
our specific and desired outcomes.
Everything that we experience in our life is initially filtered through
our senses. It is then sent through a series of personal filters and
the final result is what we call our internal representation of any
and every situation that we live through.
As soon
as we have our internal representation set, then our state and physiology
determine our behavior.
We can
go through life with the memory of one event contaminating several situations
in our life. We use NLP to reduce the strength of that memory, to a
point where you will be able to see life as it is, and not based on
that negative memory and negative association.
NLP is
also used, very effectively, to guide you in setting a plan on how to
achieve success and assisting you with making it happen.
Communication
Neuro-Linguistic
Programming also assists in making us better communicators.
Each of
us speaks using terms and phrases that feel comfortable to us. These
phrases and words help us explain ourselves, what we're thinking and
how we feel. We each have a set of words that feels more comfortable
to us than others, and that's the clue to which representational system
we prefer.
Example
Each person has a sense that's stronger than the others. If a person
sense of sight is stronger, then that person might use words such as
- see, look, view, appear, focused, illuminate, and might use phrases
like -beyond a shadow of a doubt, catch a glimpse of, mental image,
sight for sore eyes, etc.
Now,
if a person's sense of hearing is stronger, they might use words like
- hear, listen, make music, rings a bell, be all ears, resonate, and
might use phrases such as clear as a bell, loud and clear, unheard of,
voiced an opinion, etc.
However,
if a person's sense of touch is stronger, then they might use - feel,
grasp, get a hold of, make contact, get a handle on and might use phrases
such as -chip off the old block, come to grips with, firm foundations,
lay cards on the table, etc.
It is important
to listen and find out which representational system a person's using
in their everyday language, because when two people are having a discussion
using the same choice of words, they will both feel heard and understood.
Sometimes, when people talk they might be describing the same incident,
but because of their different choice of words, the other person might
end up feeling completely misunderstood.
Representational
Systems
According to each person's subconscious choice, each of us learns
and behaves differently.
People
who are visual; meaning that they use their sense of sight the most,
physically, mentally and in their speech, will usually sit or stand
up straight and breathe from the top of their lungs. These individuals
are usually very well groomed, organized and neat, as appearance is
very important to them. They memorize by seeing pictures and tend to
be less distracted by noise.
The visual person will be interested in how your project LOOKS.
People
who are auditory; meaning that they use their sense of hearing the most,
physically, mentally and in their speech, will usually move their eyes
from side to side. They tend to breath from the middle of their chest.
They talk to themselves, and are easily distracted by noise. They learn
by listening and memorize by steps and procedures. The auditory person
likes to be TOLD how they're doing, and is very sensitive to a person's
tone of voice or choice of words. The auditory person will be interested
in what you have to SAY about your project.
People
who are kinesthetic, meaning that they use their sense of touch the
most, physically, mentally and in their speech will breathe from the
bottom of their lungs. They often move and talk very slowly. They like
to stand closer to a person when talking. They memorize by doing or
walking through something.
The kinesthetic person will be interested in your project if it FEELS
right.
Eye
patterns
Another
way of learning which representational system a person uses is to look
for their . When asking a person about something that they remember,
they will involuntarily look to their left in one of three directions.
If that person looks to the left top hand corner, then they're visual,
if to the left sideways, then they're auditory and if to the left bottom
hand corner then they're kinesthetic. The reason behind this is that
every memory is connect to the stronger sense and is stored in a different
location in the brain.
